Your Natural Gifts Are Hidden In Plain Sight
I recently had a seemingly innocent conversation with another coach in my local ICF chapter. I have been sitting with that conversation for a couple of weeks now, mulling it over and coming back to it time and time again. We were networking and talking about what each of us needs to grow our practices right now. Which lead to a discussion about writing – one of my biggest passions. And then, Susan helped me hit on something that has shifted everything! In our conversation, she helped me remember that often our natural gifts are hidden in plain sight.
Here’s an excerpt from the conversation to paint the story. She was looking for help with writing and I thought she needed a ghost writer or curriculum writer – both things I love to do. As we talked about what she needed her comment was, “I have had this e-book in mind for a while, but every time I sit down to write, nothing happens.”
She asked me how I write so much. And my answer was this, “I have loved writing stories, poetry, and prose since I was a small child. Taking ideas and writing them to life is easy for me and brings me so much joy! And somehow, I have always had this knack for helping other people bring their visions to life. Whether in corporate America as a project manager, manager, or in my coaching practice.”
Why Our Natural Gifts Are Hidden In Plain Sight
What happened next is what shifted everything for me. She told me that it sounds like I have some natural gifts that I take for granted. And this lead to a deeper discussion about how difficult it can be sometimes to identify our best gifts and talents because they are so natural to us. And it maybe hard for us to realize that not everyone sees the world the way we do. Thinks about life the way we do. Or has the natural gifts we do.
I had never stopped to consider that my love of writing and ease of writing is natural. I assumed that everyone could do it and does do it. Which made me overlook this natural gift.
The same is true of my ability to be a catalyst for people. To help others break patterns that hold them back and bring ideas to life is something I do without thinking at all!
Identifying Your Natural Gifts
So how do you get at those natural gifts that are hidden in plain sight? First, I suggest you have conversations with others about what you love to do. And then, you start to notice the patterns and repetition.
Second, ask others who know you well what they see as your natural gifts and talents. Others usually have this sense of “I wish I could do … as easily as … does.” This is also an amazing way to help others identify their natural gifts and talents as well.
It’s so vitally important to identify the natural gifts and talents you have. These unique expressions are exactly what you are meant to share with the world in some way. Knowing them can help you align with work that makes your heart sing. Volunteer and leisure activities that fill you up. Or meaning and purpose in your life.
