What Makes You Feel Alive?

Do You Know What Makes You Feel Alive?

makes you feel aliveOne of the ways I have been shifting my own life, and the lives of my clients, is by tuning into what makes a person feel alive. Here’s how I know. They become animated and excited when discussing the topic, experience, or person. Their tone of voice changes and their body language is more energetic. And I sense a feeling of lightness and absolute “Yes!” as I listen or observe. With that description in mind, do you know what makes you feel alive?

As I help people become more vibrant, and as I become more and more vibrant myself, knowing what makes a person feel alive is key to the formula. My wise guide started helping me tune into this phenomenon about a year ago. And now I feel like a detective on the hunt for clues. What experiences light me up and animate me? What people resonate with me so that I feel charged up and inspired? When do I feel a “Yes!” throughout my entire body?

For so long, I worried about what I should be doing and how I should behave. Mercy! What a lot of unnecessary pressure!

Now, I am simply tuned into what makes me feel more alive. And every time I find something that lights me up in that way, I get busy figuring out how to have more of it in my life.

Identify What Makes You Feel Alive

Here are a few of the things that make me feel alive. And I share them to help you identify what makes you feel alive.

  • The ocean and big bodies of water – I thrive when receiving Vitamin Sea
  • Magical and fantastical things of every kind – “The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe,” anything by J.K. Rowling, fairy tales, unicorns, the television show, “Once Upon A Time (which is finally back on again!),” etc.
  • People who are forward thinking and follow their dreams
  • Writing
  • Time with my nieces and nephews playing, having parties, and supporting their natural gifts and talents
  • Singing
  • Moonlight and stars
  • Candlelight, flowers, jazz music and great food
  • Gorgeous art and discussions with the artists that create them
  • Intimate boutique hotels that are exquisite
  • International travel
  • Hearing foreign languages
  • Birds of prey
  • Learning about nature and observing nature in action
  • Sunshine and warm weather
  • Chances to teach, inspire others, and make the world a brighter place for all

I could go on and on, but I hope you get the point. Each of us has a personality and more importantly, a blueprint of experiences that help us know exactly what makes us more vibrant. It’s our job to follow the clues and then get busy designing a life that is filled with these key elements. And that is why I love helping clients design a life as unique as their fingerprint!

Because when my energy is vibrant, I am sending a very high vibe signal out into the world. And this signal encourages others to stop and identify what makes them feel alive.

Fill Your Life With What Makes You Feel Alive

makes you feel aliveI challenge you to sit down and make a list of what makes you feel alive. Spend as much time as you need and also, start to pay attention in your life to what lights you up.

Part two of the challenge is to look at how much of the things that make you feel alive are part of your life? Is it surprising that there are many things that make you feel alive that you never do or rarely do? What can you shift to make more room for what makes you feel alive? And what do you need to let go of because it simply does nothing to light you up?

Have some fun with this! And watch the quality of your life change.

Natural Gifts Hidden In Plain Sight

Your Natural Gifts Are Hidden In Plain Sight

natural giftsI recently had a seemingly innocent conversation with another coach in my local ICF chapter. I have been sitting with that conversation for a couple of weeks now, mulling it over and coming back to it time and time again. We were networking and talking about what each of us needs to grow our practices right now. Which lead to a discussion about writing – one of my biggest passions. And then, Susan helped me hit on something that has shifted everything! In our conversation, she helped me remember that often our natural gifts are hidden in plain sight.

Here’s an excerpt from the conversation to paint the story. She was looking for help with writing and I thought she needed a ghost writer or curriculum writer – both things I love to do. As we talked about what she needed her comment was, “I have had this e-book in mind for a while, but every time I sit down to write, nothing happens.”

She asked me how I write so much. And my answer was this, “I have loved writing stories, poetry, and prose since I was a small child. Taking ideas and writing them to life is easy for me and brings me so much joy! And somehow, I have always had this knack for helping other people bring their visions to life. Whether in corporate America as a project manager, manager, or in my coaching practice.”

Why Our Natural Gifts Are Hidden In Plain Sight

What happened next is what shifted everything for me. She told me that it sounds like I have some natural gifts that I take for granted. And this lead to a deeper discussion about how difficult it can be sometimes to identify our best gifts and talents because they are so natural to us. And it maybe hard for us to realize that not everyone sees the world the way we do. Thinks about life the way we do. Or has the natural gifts we do.

Mind blown!

I had never stopped to consider that my love of writing and ease of writing is natural. I assumed that everyone could do it and does do it. Which made me overlook this natural gift.

The same is true of my ability to be a catalyst for people. To help others break patterns that hold them back and bring ideas to life is something I do without thinking at all!

Identifying Your Natural Gifts

natural giftsSo how do you get at those natural gifts that are hidden in plain sight?  First, I suggest you have conversations with others about what you love to do. And then, you start to notice the patterns and repetition.

Second, ask others who know you well what they see as your natural gifts and talents. Others usually have this sense of “I wish I could do … as easily as … does.” This is also an amazing way to help others identify their natural gifts and talents as well.

It’s so vitally important to identify the natural gifts and talents you have. These unique expressions are exactly what you are meant to share with the world in some way. Knowing them can help you align with work that makes your heart sing. Volunteer and leisure activities that fill you up. Or meaning and purpose in your life.

Fierce Self-Love In Action

Putting Fierce Self-Love In Action

fierce self-love for better lifeI was preparing my follow-up email to the Self-Love Summit yesterday. While contemplating my own journey with self-love the past few weeks, I realized that I have adopted fierce self-love recently. I am showing up for myself in new ways and noticing things in my life that I will no longer tolerate. Some might call it trimming the fat! Others might call it up-leveling. Either way, one of the whispers of my future is a much more loving relationship with myself.

Here’s a laundry list of what I am noticing. I am:

  • Setting boundaries that I previously haven’t
  • Noticing the times that I want to disengage from some part of me and instead, welcoming my shadow, my inner child, and the other cast of characters that call my personal experience home
  • Becoming aware of what I have been tolerating and tightening up my life so I am not tolerating those things
  • Receiving from others instead of always trying to figure out how to do it all on my own
  • Continuing to work on getting my unmet needs met in a conscious way
  • Dressing each day for how I want to feel
  • Making routine time for creative expression
  • Noticing all the ways I am supported in my life from little things like the bed holding me when I sleep to big things like a project job dropping out of the sky that helps me pay my bills with ease
  • Paying attention to what is nonnegotiable in my life and carrying it forward
  • Spending time deepening relationships with those that are available for a connection that nurtures me and letting go of relationships with those that cannot be connected in that deeper way

Developing Fierce Self-Love

The journey to self-love is a life long journey. And on the road, our ability to tune into ourselves and make adjustments will help us build the muscles required to have fierce self-love. In my experience the journey is about awareness, daily practices, and fine tuning.

Ask yourself a few questions right now.

  1. What are you rocking in your relationship with yourself?
  2. Are you noticing things about your life that are a constant annoyance you just tolerate?
  3. Can you identify the nonnegotiables in your life? Those things that light you up and are worth carrying forward in your life.
  4. How do you differentiate between relationships that support you and those that bring you down?
  5. What daily or weekly practices will support you in having a more satisfying relationship with yourself?
  6. Where can you soften more and let the world support you more?

These questions will help you fine-tune your self-love journey. I highly recommend you tune into yourself and run through this list of questions every couple of months. A routine review of these questions will help you build your self-love muscles.

Support For Your Journey Of Fierce Self-Love

I practice fierce self-love, do you? There are so many great resources out there to support you. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • This article gives key steps to build your self-love muscle.
  • Another article outlines a smorgasbord of self-love practices that will spark your imagination by offering new ideas for how to be more loving toward yourself.
  • The book, Life Makeovers, by Cheryl Richardson is a classic on this topic. And it is designed to use in a group with others so you have support while building your self-love muscle!
  • Matt Kahn’s video Radical Self-Acceptance is a must see video on this topic.

Fierce self-love will take you out of the daily grind and help you create magic in your life! Because nothing that happens out there will affect you in the same way when you are loving yourself in a deep way. Your attention to how you show up for yourself will radically shift your life one choice at a time.

Whispers of the Future

Clearing and Whispers of the Future

whispers of the futureRight now as I pause and reflect on my life, I am noticing some things that feel important to share. I am going through an intense period of clearing of old emotional, mental, physical and spiritual clutter. The energy of the new moon makes this an auspicious time to let things dissolve. To punctuate the end of the energy pattern of 2016 that is still present this first quarter of 2017. It’s punctuated with endings and clearings. And at the same time, I am noticing whispers of the future. Hints of things that make sense for my life and heightened awareness of what I am carrying forward.

As we ride this new moon energy this week, it is a great time to do some clearing as well as notice what is naturally arising in our lives.

How I Am Experiencing Whispers of the Future

I have found myself in a time of releasing deeply held, old emotional patterns. So there has been a lot of crying and grieving. And as a result, a softening towards myself and my journey. I am noticing how tenderly I am able to hold myself during the difficult times that are bound to arise. This tenderness is a new experience that I have been cultivating for years and finally feeling anchored in.

A real focus on boundaries has arisen as well. I am finding myself noticing where I am always giving in relationships and never receiving. And I am asking for what I need in those relationships from a place in my heart that honors what I need as well as how the other person is able to show up. I have made myself unavailable to a couple of people in my life who always want me to give, but are unable to reciprocate. As a result, other relationships that are more nurturing have started deepening and expanding.

I feel like I am sorting and sifting. There is a lot of “No not that” and “No not this” arising. At first, that was a little overwhelming and then I realized just how clear my “Yes” is becoming. I am starting to enjoy the choices that float in and out of my experience to allow me to become crystal clear about what I want to create in my life.

And I am so aware that I am not going to settle for anything anymore.

Themes Emerging From Whispers of the Future

It strikes me that some themes have started to emerge as I focus on these whispers of the future.

  • Learning to say nowhispers of the future
  • Trusting what is true for me
  • Sifting and sorting – keeping what I want to bring forward in my life and letting go of anything that no longer serves who I am today
  • Asking for help and learning to receive when others offer support even when my pride takes a hit
  • Noticing what I have been tolerating in my life and setting boundaries
  • Gaining clarity about my preferences and how I want to show up in the world
  • Being done with twisting, bending and self-sacrificing in any way
  • Making choices that are from a place of self-love instead of fear

Your Whispers of the Future

Your turn! What is leaving your life and what is emerging? What are you noticing is core to who you are and how you prefer to show up in the world? How can you make your life more natural for you? What are you absolutely done doing in your life? And what would you like to carry forward?

Take some time to reflect on all that is shifting in your life right now.

And decide what actions you can take to support this new future that is emerging for you.

Here’s a little spoken truth. When whispers of the future show up, you often have to realign to meet them. Which means, there will be a pause as you let go of what won’t serve you and align with what you are meant to experience. I call this the transition or preparation phase. It’s such an important time for anyone who is going through transformation.

And we often try to rush through it and get to the outcome. But in this pause, a richness can be cultivated. You can soften towards yourself and hold yourself in the uncertainty. You can allow yourself to feel whatever needs to arise. And then, the spaces that exist in this transition phase will allow new ways of being to show up in your life.

Rushing any of it overrides the purpose of this important part of the transformation process.

Creating and Holding Space for Your Life

Creating and Holding Space for Your Life

Read abput creating and holding space to create life you want.I was reflecting the past couple of days on the idea of dreaming things into our lives. Shamanic teachings speak about the dream time, not in the sleeping way. But in reference to our ability to dream what we desire into our lives. I am not always the most patient person I know and I have been sitting with what puts me in alignment with my higher path. I manifest when I am creating and holding space for my ideal life.

So what do I mean by this statement? It’s a combination of holding an intention while at the same time having a feeling sense of spaciousness around the intention. When I hold an intention for my life and start strangling it with how it will happen or what I need to be doing, it rarely works out. In contrast, when I hold an intention lightly, playfully, and spaciously, ideas and inspiration drop in and illuminate a path for the process.

Here’s an example from my own life. I have been calling in right work for myself for some time now. And when I get caught up in thinking I know exactly how it should look, I create a death grip and literally strangle the intention. But the minute I chill out and trust it will unfold, new ideas drop out of nowhere to make it happen. And one small step at a time a whole new life is unfolding for me. New people to collaborate with, ideas that make every cell in my body cry out “Yes!” because it feels so right, and inspiration to work through the bumps that crop up along the way.

Creating and Holding Space is Active

I am a “take action” person most of the time. I am not afraid to take risks and try new things. And at the same time, I like to have some research backing up my approach. Having said that, for many years I have struggled with creating and holding space because to me it felt like I wasn’t doing anything. Now I know that creating and holding space is a very active process.

There is a distinct difference between taking action that is out of alignment and taking action while I am in alignment. When I am in alignment, my heart, soul, mind, and body are all in the game. I am making decisions and taking action from a place where all parties have an equal say. There is a sense of ease and flow no matter how challenging the action item turns out to be for me personally.

I have learned that when I am creating and holding space for what I want to experience in my life. And connecting with the intention consistently, but loosely with a sense of adventure, amazing things happen.

My Top Tips for Creating and Holding Space

creating and holding spaceHere’s what I know about keeping myself in the flow.

  • Create an intention that is solid and flexible at the same time – not too many details and not too few. When I itemize every last detail without room for flexibility, I miss the most important pieces of the puzzle. I miss them because I wasn’t able to see them ahead of time and they are always so much better than what I had in mind.
  • Call in playfulness around whatever I am creating and holding space around. I remind myself to play at what I am intending. I approach the process with a light heart and a child-like innocence about the possibilities.
  • Tune into my body, mind, heart, and soul to make sure I am staying in alignment. If one of the players isn’t doing well in the game, I give her the attention she needs until she is able to rejoin the flock of alignment.
  • Ask myself powerful questions about what is possible without needing answers. So many times we ask ourselves questions knowing what our answer is going to be. Which kills any chance for spaciousness! Some of my favorite questions are:
    • “What else is possible about my relationship with …?”
    • “What would it be like to experience …?”
    • “How would I be showing up if I was already …?”

Creative Ways to Wrangle Your Inner Critic

Creative Ways to Wrangle Your Inner Critic

wrangle your inner criticI don’t think a discussion about creativity and authenticity would be complete without looking at your relationship with your inner critic. I myself have daily battles with the voice in my head I lovingly refer to as Dr. Degrader. And I have found that my inner critic, left to his own devices, can sabotage faster than a New York minute!  So how do we create a positive relationship with this character? How can you wrangle your inner critic?

The age old adage that awareness is the first key applies here. When I am not aware and he is playing his greatest hits in the background of my mind, that’s when it all goes sideways. I have ways I remember to consciously relate to my inner critic. I firmly believe that making regular dates with your inner critic is a must!

Ways to Make Peace with Your Inner Critic

There are a few ways of dealing with the inner critic that really speak to me.  One is from a teacher I met along the way.  Her advice was to invite the critic to tea. She would say, “Remember that tea is happening in your house and you are the person in charge of the house, but the critic gets to be heard and seen. And when tea is over, the critic has to head home.”

The second, I just heard recently while doing interviews for my Self-love Summit. This international artist, Jessica Serran, described her process of getting a huge box and cutting a door in it. When her inner critic was rearing it’s ugly head, she would climb in that box, shut the door and write down whatever it had to say on the walls of the box.  Contained, expressive and effective!

The third, which I have done, is to create a character. Give your inner critic a name, create an image, notice it’s language choices and other features.  In creating a character, you give some distance between you and the inner critical voice which will help you observe more and react less. Dr. Degrader is a troll with a huge nose and a terrible slouch.  He has angry, beady eyes and a scowl that never quits. He sits on a log wearing a loincloth and looks strangely similar in his facial expressions to Grumpy from “Snow White.” He has ugly glasses which just adds to his unsavory appearance.

Do you notice how it’s easier to have distance the more I describe who he is?

Making Time to Connect with Your Inner Critic

wrangle your inner criticIn the end, this is a relationship. So the more time you make for him or her, the better the relationship will be for you. If you are constantly butting heads, pushing the inner critic away, or trying desperately to ignore it the results will be painful.

The inner critic is a safety mechanism that you helped create a long time ago. It’s sole purpose was to help you be safe in the situations you were surviving. It likes to work and it wants to keep you safe. These two facts are important to note when dealing with the inner critic.

What he or she wants is simple, some of your time and attention.  How you choose to make this happen can be as unique as you are, and there are simple techniques I have collected along the way.

  • Have scheduled meetings with your inner critic
  • Journal letting the inner critic voice guide what is being said – even if for only a few minutes
  • Meditate on your inner critic and what it is trying to say to you and do for you
  • Reassign the inner critic to new work
  • Work with the inner critic to create a script you can both agree on for certain challenging situations
  • Track how often your inner critic fires off by putting a penny in a jar each time you notice it in a day (or a paper clip, or whatever else you have an abundance of lying around)

Resources and Announcements

A few books have been instrumental for me on this journey:

  1. Your Inner Critic is a Big Jerk speaks specifically to the creative process and relationship with your inner critic.
  2. Making Peace with Your Mind uses mindfulness as tool for managing your inner critic. Experts Mark Coleman and Tara Brach coauthored the book.
  3. Shut Your Monkey also offers great ways to understand and work with your inner critic.

Rediscover Your Authentic Voice

Ways To Rediscover Your Authentic Voice

rediscover your authentic voiceAs I was thinking about the journey of life. And specifically, thinking about the topic of self-love. I realized that one of the most loving things I can do for myself is to be more authentic. When I drop all of the ways I spend my time and energy trying to make others happy and fit in, I am left with my unique way of  being in the world.  The same is true for you. And when you rediscover your authentic voice, you will be happier and more engaged in your life.

I recently wrote a blog post, Finding Your Authentic Voice, and this is a follow-up on the topic. In that blog, I shared the story of my voice lesson and how I found a song that felt like a “Yes” in every cell of my body. If I expand on that idea, I believe all of us are seeking experiences in every area of our life that are a resounding “Yes!” to fill our lives. When we find these experiences and dedicate our time and energy to them we are more fulfilled. But too many of us have learned to put ourselves and our passions last to care well for others. So we shift our attention on what we have to do and slowly, our light goes out. We become less vibrant, less radiant, and less jazzed up about our lives.

Redefine Responsibility To Rediscover Your Authentic Voice

A wise person recently helped me clarify my misinformed sense of responsibility.  In my life, responsibility has been about doing what is right for others. It’s about doing what needs to be done to keep things on track. And it felt like discipline, obligation, hyper-vigilance, and working nonstop to get the never ending checklist complete.

Imagine my surprise when she uttered these life changing words. “Responsibility is about responding to whatever is arising in your own experience.” (Anyone else hear the music stop and the room chatter come to a screeching halt?!)

I literally had a scrambled brain, mind blown moment when I heard those words. Years of good Catholic programming were shot down in an instant. And then, the full body “Yes!” feeling hit me.

I am thinking about it this way.  If I am sick, the responsible way to manage that is to pause and take care of myself. But what I have actually done in the past is very different.  I have felt guilty about what I am not doing. Worried about who I am disappointing. And let my inner critic take me through a round for getting sick.

So I started applying that same logic to every area of my life.  And what happened next was amazing! I realized that changing my mind would change how I experienced my life.

Rediscover Your Authentic Voice By Changing Your Mindset

rediscover your authentic voiceThe experience with responsibility made me realize that the biggest determining factor of my life right now is poor programming.  Or said differently, a mindset that is not supportive of my best possible life. If I want to be more loving of myself, and in turn, others (i.e. radiate more heart light) I need to tend to my mindset asap!

I challenge you to take inventory, like I did. Notice where your sense of responsibility is tripping you up and start programming in the opposite mindset right now.

Here’s my laundry list of areas I noticed to get you started:

  • How I tend to myself when I am sick
  • What I do when something disappointing happens
  • Why I prioritize certain activities and undervalue some that really matter to me
  • How many things I do out of habit that drain my energy
  • What I do about the things that really bring me joy
  • Why I make decisions based on someone else’s sense of what’s right

It didn’t take long to realize that I am living far too much of my life based on someone’s opinion of what is right for me!

And here’s the truth. This means I am giving my power away. Which puts everyone else in the awkward position of being in charge of letting me know when I am on track, when I am disappointing them, etc. That is a no win situation for everyone involved!

Rediscover Your Authentic Voice Then Live It Out Loud!

This leads to the best part. Once you take inventory and start reprogramming your mindset. And after you take your power back and value your voice and opinion more than the well meaning “others” out there. You get to enjoy the process of making decisions and spending time doing what truly resonates with you.

Scary? Likely. Unfamiliar? Probably. Game changer? You know it is!

  • So what decisions can you make today about how you want to spend your time and energy?
  • How can you start honoring your own authentic experience as the most valuable piece of information out there?
  • What are the words, scripts and thoughts you can start programming into your mind to help you make the shift?
  • And what are you willing to stop doing out of habit or obligation to make more room for your authentic voice to surface?

This is an inside job. Expect your inner voices to kick up and create some self-doubt. Expect old programming to trip you up from time to time.  And despite it all, just keep going.

The High Vibration Of Self-Love

Living In The High Vibration of Self-Love

high vibration of self-loveHaven’t you heard it a million times? The wisdom that we have 2 choices, love or fear. And how we choose in each moment affects our vibration. I sense that those of us on the spiritual journey take it too far. We think that choosing the high vibration of self-love means we should never feel angry, negative, or afraid. And so we try to censor what arises in us or turn away by practicing affirmations and positive thinking. Don’t you think it’s time we reach a hand out to ourselves and be there for ourselves like we are for others?

The pattern of censoring and over caring for others simply does not work at all!!

In this month of love, I ask you to consider how you can be more loving of your entire experience. Realizing that the ups and downs, the difficult feelings and experiences, and your frustrations are not a detour from your path. Everything is sacred. And you can’t do this wrong.

Too many times we have been taught to abandon ourselves when we need more love, not less. It’s time to step up for yourself in a whole new way!

That’s unconditional love at its finest. That’s living in the high vibration of self-love.

What It Means To Live In The High Vibration Of Self-Love

I find myself looking at self-love in a whole new way right now. I am so excited about the Self-Love Summit because I am hearing new and deeper things as I do the interviews with experts. And what I am hearing is making me look at how I show up for myself. Overall, I am extending a deeply compassionate, nurturing parent vibe to my repertoire.

In the month of love, I am challenging myself to look at self-love in a whole new way. Here are some of the things that I am doing to live in the high vibration of self-love:

  • Setting the intention to love myself more and remind myself of this love throughout my day.
  • Saying “I love you” at least 10 times a day to myself while holding my hand on my heart.
  • Accepting all of my feelings, especially the difficult ones that I have censored in the past.
  • Giving my inner critic, Dr. Degrader, a place at the table so I am in conversation with this part of myself. Which means I am done with letting him have his way with me!
  • Allowing in and noticing all the ways that love and support surround me. Think about the gentleman that opens the door for you. Hugs from friends. Things that touch your heart.
  • Making choices all day long based on answering the question, “What is the most loving thing I can do for myself right now?”
  • Saying the words to myself that I most need to hear when I am struggling with difficult emotions or thoughts.
  • Making time each morning to still my mind and connect with the deepest part of myself.

It’s Easy To Hang In The High Vibration of Self-Love

high vibration of self-loveOkay, it might be a stretch at first. Who am I kidding? I thought this would be much easier than it is! But I trust this process.

I was on the phone with a client yesterday and she is going through a major transition. And it became obvious in a short amount of time that she is being far too hard on herself. She was plagued with thoughts about how she should know the answers. Plagued with feeling like somehow she was disappointing others. And she was wondering how she could just be more like everyone else.

I felt like I was in a time machine. And I was seeing myself just a few short years ago. I had the exact same questions and feelings. So I had a unique opportunity to extend the hand of support to her that I didn’t extend to myself back then.

I gave her permission to understand that what she was going through was monumental. That she might not have answers for a while and that it didn’t indicate anything was wrong with her. I let her know that she was normal in her seeking of safety and familiarity. And I helped her identify what she most needed to feel supported in this process. What I didn’t do was make her feel like she needed to get over it, move on, or hurry up.

That is the epitome of the high vibration of self-love. And I know that she showed up in my coaching practice as a reflection of my new intention and practice.

Support For Living In The High Vibration Of Self-Love

There is a call from a consciousness perspective, right now. And this call is about alignment. The first part of this alignment is about seeing ourselves and all of our experiences as Divine Love. There are a number of amazing resources circulating right now to help you make this transition.

Some of these resources are repeats, but they are so good.

  1. Here is a song that might feel a little cheesy at first, but sit with it. It invites you to a place of deep compassion and self-love.  It’s called “Gentle With Myself.”
  2. I love Louise Hay’s work on self-love and acceptance. Here is a quick exercise to help reframe your thoughts to be more loving and supportive. I also really love her prayer called “Deep At The Center of My Being.” I dare you to read that to yourself every day for 30 days.
  3. Matt Kahn’s book “Whatever Arises, Love That,” is still a game changer for me and his YouTube video “Embracing Your Humanity” will touch your heart.
  4. The Self-Love Summit starts February 12th. I know that this gift I created is powerful. The interviews touched my heart and I know they will touch you as well. I am gathering the best resources to help you deepen your own self-love. Give yourself this gift for Valentine’s Day! And please invite others to the conversation!  I would love for you to share the link with others.

The Search For Love Starts With You

The Search For Love Starts With You

search for loveIn honor of February, the month of love, I am re-sharing my story about becoming my own beloved. The reason I am sharing again is that the work has taken on a life of it’s own and created a movement for me personally. And as I speak with other experts in the field in preparation for the Self-Love Summit that starts on February 12th, they all speak to a similar theme. If they boiled down their own life experience and the work they do with others, it would all lead back to journey of self-love.

Here’s how my eight years of deep personal transformation came to a crescendo recently and how that moment changed everything about the quality of my life.

My personal journey took an interesting turn around the Winter Solstice this past December. I have spent years looking outside of myself for love, acceptance, and approval. Can any of you relate? I never fully understood what it meant to experience unconditional self-love until that fated day in the middle of December.

The Search For Love Brought Me To Myself

I had ended a romantic relationship that was on again and off again. He was clearly not the right guy for me, but I couldn’t seem to kick the habit of him. And then it happened! Saturday night, I had decided not to see him again and the desire to just go see him was overwhelming.

It was the holidays and I was alone again. After all, I have been divorced for eight years and just wanted a special someone with whom to share my life experiences.  I felt crippled by the heartache that comes with ending a relationship and devastated to be facing the loneliness I was tired of feeling. Fortunately, in that moment, I didn’t go see him, and instead did a practice that literally changed my life.

I laid on the couch for hours, holding my heart and saying the words, “I love you” over and over again.  I imagined that my soul was holding my heart. I spoke to myself like a small, frightened child.  I let myself feel every emotion from the longing to be with a partner, the desire to be loved and cherished, and the heartache of never knowing love. I censored nothing and loved whatever arose in me.

The Moment When Everything Changed

search for loveA little over an hour later an amazing thing happened. I had the experience of becoming my own beloved. I felt such a rise of unconditional love for myself that I was moved to tears. The ache and longing for a life partner dissolved. The addictive quality of constant search for love subsided. And I felt held and nurtured by the deepest part of myself; my soul.

I experienced my own inner Divine Masculine that day. I felt protected, cared for, held, and supported during a really dark time. I didn’t  go see the guy and a voice inside of me said gently, “Don’t go. He will crush your heart again. You deserve more.” That sense of protectiveness is a feeling that I had sought all of my life and never found.

I know that I healed a lineage of dark relationship history from my family in that moment. A lineage that was filled with overt male domination and aggression. I changed my own inner masculine parent. I created the voice in me that I had been longing to hear all of my life.

As a result, in my search for love I absolutely know that the next partner I attract will be very different than the list of romantic partners I have historically attracted.

Your Search For Love Should Lead You To Your Own Heart

The search for love outside of you is always an indication that your heart needs more love and attention. Sadly, too many fairy tales and television shows lead us to believe that we will find that love and attention somewhere out there.

In truth, the love we seek is always available within our own hearts. And the more we access this deep well of unconditional love, the more our external circumstances change.  Whatever you are searching for and desiring absolutely matters. But first, tap into your own unconditional, loving heart; because doing so will change the quality of what you create in your external world.

Finding Your Authentic Voice

Finding Your Most Authentic Voice

Finding Your Most Authentic VoiceYesterday I had my voice lesson and the experience took me to a whole new level. When I started working with my voice teacher two years ago, I was terrified. And I had a few questions for myself. Who was I to be singing again after 20 years? And how could I spend good money each week on voice lessons when I had no interest in performing? Yesterday, the answer to those questions showed up, I am finding my authentic voice.

Yesterday, we found a song that was such an incredible fit for my voice and I loved singing so much that I was on fire. I found myself humming and singing the tune all day long! It’s a classic jazz tune by Ella Fitzgerald, “Cry Me A River.” The groove was right, the key was right, the arrangement fit my voice perfectly, and the sentiment was perfect for what I have experienced in my life. Singing it was magic and easy! And I just felt a huge “Yes” throughout my entire body. Obviously this experience around my singing voice is just the tip of the iceberg. And it left me thinking of all of the ways I have been cultivating my authentic voice in my life.

More than anything, I want a life that feels like singing that song did. Where the important ingredients create the deep feeling of “Yes!” in every cell of my being.

The Journey Of Finding Your Authentic Voice

As I continue to call in my heart’s desires, I can become impatient and feel like nothing is happening at times.  Can anyone relate? Yesterday reminded me that all of the “No” answers I have been experiencing lately are helping me gain a ton of clarity about what the big “Yes!” looks like. In voice lessons, I have spent two years singing mostly vocal exercises to smooth out the rough patches, train my ears to hear the subtleties better, and strengthen my voice overall. Most days I just wanted to have a voice that sounded good and it seemed like that would never happen!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of experiencing the moment where I knew exactly what sounds best fit my voice. And all of the hard work to strengthen my voice paid off. So all of the preparation and all of the constantly feeling like I was “getting no where fast” was part of this important journey. My persistence in “sticking to it” is finally creating some magic in my life.

Along the journey to our most authentic life, there will be a fair amount of contrast and the opposite of what we want to experience. In the past, I would beat myself up thinking I was doing something wrong when this contrast arose. Now, I realize the contrast provides the gift of clarity on the journey of getting to my authentic voice. And I am having more “Yes!” experiences today than ever before.

So take some time to pause and look back on the past couple of years of your life. What have you been preparing for and cultivating? And how has the contrast helped you gain more clarity about what you do want to experience?

Trusting Your Authentic Voice

Finding Your Most Authentic VoiceIf you are like me at all, you learned early on that you shouldn’t trust your most authentic voice. So you spent a lot of time trying to be more like everyone else. And slowly over time, you squelched the creativity that was uniquely yours. And when that creativity was squelched, your heart and soul took a hit. Because your unique spark is required in the world. Expressing it is mission critical to your well-being.

A quote by e.e. cummings leaps to my mind.

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

Today I am inviting you to reclaim that authentic voice that is uniquely yours. Not just your speaking voice, but everything about how you show up in the world. Think about the words you use to express yourself, the way you dress, what you like to spend your free time doing, and all of the other areas of your life.

How much full body “Yes!” are you getting in each area of your life? Where are you out of alignment with your most unique self? And how can you call some of the magic back into your life?

It’s about walking a journey one step at a time that allows you to gain clarity about what is uniquely you and letting go of everything else. For me, I am realizing there are some things I need to stop doing in my life to be more authentic.

Trust that how you see things, and how you want to express yourself in your life are pure magic! You don’t need anyone’s permission or approval. I am giving you full permission right now to just be you. It’s more than enough.

I would love to hear from you in the comments below or in the Facebook group. How can you align with your most authentic voice in your life?
